Hi everyone! This glossary helps us understand terms that are often used in the Police Technology program, and even in our everyday life. I created this one in order to allow you to fully understand some terms that you would be able to hear one day without wondering what it means.
Alibi
Noun
A claim or piece of evidence that one was elsewhere when an act, especially a criminal one, is alleged to have taken place.
Example: She has an alibi for the whole of yesterday evening.

Arrest warrant
Noun
It's a document ordering a peace officer to arrest an individual and take him to court.
Example: He has received his arrest warrant and is due to appear in court this week.

Brigadier
Noun
A rank of officer in the British army, above colonel and below major general.
Example: The senior officers - generals, brigadiers, colonels - were all at a loss about what to do.

Charge
Verb
Formally accuse (someone) of something, especially an offence under law.
Example: They were charged with assaul.

Court
Noun
A body of people presided over by a judge, judges, or magistrate, and acting as a tribunal in civil and criminal cases.
Example: She will take the matter to court.

Crime
Noun
An action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law.
Example: This man is in prison today because he committed a crime.

Crime scene
Noun
The place where an offence has been committed and forensic evidence may be gathered.
Example: There are some fingerprints left at a crime scene

Exhibit
Noun
A document or other object produced in a court as evidence.
Example: Many exhibits, including the cockpit voice recordings, will be produced in court.

Example: He was handcuffed during his arrest

Noun
A public officer appointed to decide cases in a law court
Example: He is due to appear before a judge and jury on Monday.

Law
Noun
The system of rules which a particular country or community recognizes as regulating the actions of its members and which it may enforce by the imposition of penalties.
Example: Some people can get away with breaking the law and others face penalties.

The action or activity of compelling observance of or compliance with the law.
Example: He retired from a career in law enforcement.

Murder weapon
Noun
The weapon used to commit a murder
Example: The murder weapon of this murder is a knife

Offence
Noun
A breach of a law or rule; an illegal act.
Example: The new offence of obtaining property by deception.

Patrol
Noun
An expedition to keep watch over an area, especially by guards or police walking or driving around at regular intervals.
Example: We were ordered to investigate on a night patrol.

Police academy
Noun
A police academy is a training school for police recruits. It is also known as a law enforcement academy, college, or university. It involves a variety of background checks. The academy prepares recruits for the law enforcement agency they will be assigned to upon graduation.
Example: I've been studying and training at the police academy for two years now.

Police chief

The person in charge of a police force
Example: A report from the new police chief.

Public Safety
Noun
Public security generally refers to the various aspects of public order and security aimed at protecting the population of a State against internal threats, as opposed to external security which aims at the defense of a territory against foreign threats. Generally, the national police, municipal, the national gendarme and customs are responsible for ensuring public security.
Example: Police officers are among those responsible for public safety.

Noun
An act of searching for someone or something.
Example: The police carried out a thorough search of the premises

Traffic ticket
Noun
An official notification of a traffic offence, issued by a police officer or another official.
Example: He got a ticket because he was not parked on the correct side of the street.
